  • The Christian is authorized to personally teach the word.? Matthew 28:20; Acts 8:4
  • The Christian is authorized to support another to teach the word.? II John 5-8; I Corinthians 16:17
  • The Christian is authorized to support the preaching of the word collectively.? I Corinthians 9:7-14; II Corinthians 11:7-9; Philippians 4:15-17
    • In the local church where he is a member
    • In other places
• Local church is God’s specificied collective arrangement.
  • Music:? only vocal music authorized
  • Collective teaching:? only work through a local church is authorized
• No brotherhood arrangement authorized
  • Local church to support preachers
  • Local church to train preachers – no human arrangement needed.
• From local church directly to the preacher.? This is God’s way at work!

• I Timothy 3:1?- Being an elder involves work – it is not about being in control of things.
• Titus 1:7?- Elders are stewards of God.
• The work of elders
  • Set proper example.? I Peter 5:3
  • Feed, tend, shepherd the flock.? I Peter 5:2
    • Feed flock to edify.? Acts 20:28,32
    • Watch for souls.? Hebrews 13:17; Ezekiel 3:17
    • Restore the fallen.? Titus 1:9-11; Ezekiel 34:1-10
    • Correct gainsayers.? Titus 1:9
  • Rule the flock.? Hebrews 13:17
    • By serving? (See Luke 22:25-26?regarding ruling over others.)
    • By leading
    • By teaching
  • Oversee the flock.? Acts 20:28; I Peter 5:1-3
• Elders are not bosses; they are servants of the flock.
  • Their rule is not despotic, tyrannical, or arbitrary.
  • Oversight necessitates that elders make some decisions.
  • In decisions of any magnitude, elders that rule well will feel the pulse of the flock.
    • To fail to do so is to invite trouble.
    • When elders lead the flock to harmonious decisions, there will not be trouble.
• It is not the work of elders:
  • To be a centralized board to receive money from many congregations to do a big work.
  • To build, maintain, or support human institutions for any cause.
  • To oversee any brotherhood functions.
    • Brotherhood preaching training programs
    • Brotherhood lectureships
  • When we thing about elders, let us think about the local church, not about the brotherhood.

• God authorized the church to provide for needy saints.
  • Acts 6:2-4
  • Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-35; Acts 6:1-3; 11:27-30; Romans 15:25-26; I corinthians 16:1-3; II Corinthians 8:3-4,14; 9:1; I Timothy 5:16,5?- only needy saints provided for.
  • Shouldn’t the church help people by doing good works?
    • Yes, but only those good works for which it was designed.
  • Can’t churches do whatever individuals do?
    • No, this is not true.? II Thessalonians 3:7-12; Ephesians 6:4; Titus 2:4-5; I Corinthians 7:2-5
  • Does the Bible ever say not to use church money another way?
    • No, but that’s not how Bible authority works.
    • God’s silence does not permit – it prohibits.
      • Colossians 3:17; I Corinthians 4:6; Acts 15:24; II John 9; Jeremiah 19:4-6; 32:35; Leviticus 10:1; Hebrews 7:14; 8:4
• God authorized the church to provide for worship and edification.
  • Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 16:1-2; Hebrews 10:23-25; I Corinthians 14:3,12,17,26,40
  • What about using church money for kitchens, fellowship halls, gymnasiums, etc.?
    • Since God did not authorize them, we cannot use church money for these things.
  • But aren’t we edifying each other when we socialize or share a meal together?
    • The Bible uses edification very specifically to mean a church assembling together to worship.
• God authorized the church to provide for the preaching of the gospel.
  • I Thessalonians 1:8; I Corinthians 9:9-14; II Corinthians 11:7-8; Philippians 4:14-18
  • What about other arrangements?
    • Since they are not authorized, they are wrong.

Local Church Membership

• The Lord adds one to the church in a universal sense when one is baptized, but that does not automatically make one a member of any particular local church.
• What is the local church?
  • It is a special fellowship in which one agrees to worship and work with other Christians in a locality.
  • The local church is under a common oversight.
  • The members give into a common fund to finance the work the Lord authorized the local church to do.
• By what procedure does one become part of a local church?
  • There are three things involved:
    • Must be a Christian
    • Must agree to work and worship with the local church.
    • Local church agrees to accept.
• What is the purpose of local church membership?
  • To do the things Christ authorized a local church to do:
    • Glorify God.? Ephesians 3:21; I Corinthians 10:31
    • Edify the saved.? Acts 20:28,32
    • Teach sinners.? Philippians 4:15-26
    • Benevolence and discipline under some circumstances.? Acts 4:34-36; I Corinthians 5:1-5
    • Each has equal obligation according to ability and assignment.? Matthew 25:15
• Who is really in the local fellowship?
  • Those who have joined.? Acts 9:26
  • Those who have partnership in the work assigned by Christ.? Acts 9:28
  • Not one who ceases to work in the local fellowship and will not repent.? II Thessalonians 3:6
• A local church is to control its fellowship.
  • Discipline one who is living so as to bring reproach upon the Name of Christ.? I Corinthians 5:5
  • Refuse to receive one who is living so as to bring reproach upon Christ.? Acts 9:26
• The Bible knows nothing of “free lance” members.
  • Must join a local fellowship.? Acts 9:26
  • Must work with a local fellowship.? Acts 9:28
  • Each needs fellowship with other Christians for edification of himself and others.? Hebrews 10:24-25
  • Each needs to be under oversight of elders.? Hebrews 13:17
• Are students to still be members back home or are they to be members where they attend?
  • Students should be members where they attend.
  • For nine months of school, students should be members where they attend.
  • For three months out of school, students should be members where they attend.
