God’s Word is the Answer

By David Watson

Benchley, March 1, 2009

[Notes provided from David's handout for this lesson.? Thanks, Dave!]

God?s Word Is The Answer

  1. To man?s search for truth.
    1. ?What is truth?? (John 18:38).
    2. God?s Word is the standard of truth.
      1. Psalm 19:9 asserts, ?The judgments of the Lord are true.?
      2. People tend to reject this universal standard of truth (Isaiah 5:20, 24, Jeremiah 10:23).
      3. We need to get back to God?s word (Psalm 119:105, Acts 26:25).
      4. It will be the basis for eternal judgment (II Thessalonians 2:12).
    3. The Bible is God?s word.
      1. The Old Testament writers attributed their words to God (Isaiah 1:2, II Peter 1:21).
      2. The New Testament records the words of Jesus as He spoke the truth (John 8:31-32).
      3. Jesus? apostles were inspired by the Holy Spirit and continued revealing truth (John 16:13, Acts 2:4, I Corinthians 2:13, 14:37, I Thessalonians 2:13, II Timothy 3:16).
      4. The Bible is the only book which is God?s word (Galatians 1:6-9).
  1. To religious division.
    1. If there is only one God, why are there so many churches?
    2. God desires unity.
      1. Jesus prayed for all people to ?be perfected in unity? (John 17:20-23).

      2. Ephesians 4:4-6: there is only ?one faith? and ?one body? (body=church, see 1:22-23).
      3. Paul condemned division in Corinth (I Corinthians 1:13).
    3. How can we unite in the way Jesus prayed for?
      1. Jesus prayed, ?Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth? (John 17:17).
      2. The unity God desires will come only when people cast off man-made ideas and submit to the truth revealed in the Bible, which saves souls. (See Matthew 7:21).
    4. History has repeated itself.
      1. The modern departure from truth is nothing new (Jeremiah 6:16).
      2. Today, people have again abandoned the Bible and turned to the ideas of men.
    5. The confusion is not coming from the Bible.
      1. Many doctrines taught today are not found in the Bible, thus the confusion!
      2. Jesus condemned those ?teaching as doctrines the precepts of men? (Matthew 15:8-9).
    6. We must learn the meaning of ?once for all.?
      1. ?the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints? (Jude 3).
      2. Let us unite upon the gospel message for which Jesus Christ shed His blood.
  2. To the problem of sin.
    1. Without sin, life would be great!
      1. It was for Adam and Eve until they sinned (Genesis 3:3).
      2. Sin separates a person from God (Isaiah 59:1-2).
    2. What is sin?
      1. I John 3:4 states that ?sin is lawlessness.?
      2. We?re all guilty (Romans 3:23), thus spiritually dead (Romans 5:12).
    3. Jesus is the solution.
      1. Jesus came to earth to solve the sin problem (John 1:29, I John 3:5).
      2. Our obligation is to take advantage of this Divine solution to the sin problem (John 12:48).
      3. We can?t be saved without obeying the Bible?s commands (Romans 1:16, James 1:21-22).

By Randy Dean

Benchley, February 15, 2009

  • I Timothy 1:13
  • Genesis 2:9,16-17,19-20?- Adam and Eve had the most perfect life possible on earth.
    • Life could not have been simpler for Adam and Eve.
  • Genesis 3:1-6?- Sin enters the picture.
    • It was simple things that got Adam and Eve in trouble.? Notice that Eve said they weren’t even supposed to touch the fruit, since that was a prelude to eating it.
  • Fearing God causes us to do His commandments.? II Chronicles 19:9
    • When Adam and Eve sinned, they were not fearing God.
  • Genesis 4:6-7?- God talks to Cain before he kills Abel.? It’s easy to do good when things are good, but hard when things are bad.
  • Genesis 19:26?- Lot’s wife disobeyed a simple command and was killed.
    • Uzzah made the same kind of mistake when he touched the ark (II Samuel 6:6-7).
    • Acts 5?- Ananias and Sapphira sinned in what should have been a simple transaction.
  • Philippians 4:19?- God will supply our needs.
  • Matthew 6:25-34?- We must learn to be content with what God gives us.
  • Romans 5:12-21

Handling Sin

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, October 19, 2008

  • Private sin
    • Known only by you and God.
    • Do not make it public.
    • Take care of it with God.? I John 1:9
  • Sin against another
    • Known only by you and the other.
    • Do not make it public.
    • Take care of it with the other.? Matthew 5:23-24
  • A brother has sinned against you
    • Go to him alone if he will hear.? Matthew 18:15-17
    • Take one or two witnesses and if he will not hear…
    • Take it to the church and if he will not hear…
    • Let him be unto you as a heathen and have no part with him.
  • A sin that is known by many
  • Summed up:
    • Confession of sin is to be as public as the sin.
      • Known by God, confess to God.
      • Known by only one, confess to that one.
      • Known by few, confess to that few.
      • Known by many, confess publicly.
    • This is how to handle sin.? Proverbs 28:13
