• In this chapter, James shows that pure religion is personal.  If I am saved, it is because I overcame temptation, it is because I overcame lust, etc.
• James 1:1-12
  • Temptation overcome works spiritual growth and blessing.  (James 1:2-4)
  • When tempted, do not try to make it alone; turn to God for help.  (James 1:5-8)
  • Blessed is the one, who in trust of the Lord, overcomes temptation.  (James 1:12)
• James 1:13-15
  • God cannot be tempted with evil, nor does He tempt any man with evil.  (James 1:13)
  • People do tempt, i.e., test God.  (Luke 20:23; Acts 5:9; Acts 15:10)
  • God does tempt, i.e., test people.  (Genesis 22:1)
  • But it is the devil, through lust, that tempts people with evil.  (James 1:14-15)
• James 1:17-18
  • Every good and every perfect gift is from God.  (James 1:17)
  • The greatest gift is to be begotten by God and be His.  (James 1:18)
• James 1:19-27
  • Self-control (James 1:19)
  • Purity (James 1:21)
  • Reception of truth (James 1:21)
  • Meekness (James 1:21)
  • Obedience (James 1:22-24)
  • Steadfastness (James 1:25)

  • A Christian should be among the best business men.
• Domestic – home

  • Parents – Ephesians 6:4; Titus 2:3-5; Hebrews 12:9-10

  • Keep self pure – I Timothy 5:22; James 1:27; Philippians 1:27; Ephesians 5:27

  • Give in local church fund as prospered so the work assigned the local church can be financed.
• Let us resolve to live such lives as to glorify God in our every walk and relationship of life.

• Romans 13:14?- Make no provision at all for evil.
• Ephesians 5:11?- Have no fellowship with evil.
• Psalms 101:2-3?- “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes.”
• Philippians 4:8?- Think on good things.
• Proverbs 4:23?- Keep your heart with diligence.
• Excuses
  • I hear vulgarity all the time and it doesn’t effect me.
    • Colossians 3:1-2
  • Mature minds can handle mature subjects.
    • Is there any age at which a Christian should seek out evil?
    • I Peter 2:11; Matthew 5:27-30
  • Some of those movies are really good!
    • Of course they are good!? That’s how the devil entices us.
• What can we do?
  • Be honest about the ratings!
  • Just turn it off.
  • Beware of plop and LOP TV watching.
  • Don’t let your kids watch TV after you go to sleep.
  • Throw out bad movies.

• In our text, there are several things involved in pure religion.
  • Self control (James 1:19)
  • Purity (James 1:21)
    • I Timothy 4:12?- be a good example
    • Matthew 5:16?- let your light shine
  • Reception of truth (James 1:21)
    • Isaiah 55:11?- hear the word of the Lord
    • Luke 7:30?- many did not receive truth
    • Hosea 1:6 – God rejects those who reject Him
  • Meekness (James 1:21)
    • Being angry at the right things at the right time and not at the wrong things at the wrong time.
  • Obedience (James 1:22)
    • Colossians 3:6?- the importance of obedience
  • Steadfastness (James 1:25)
    • II Peter 1:5-11
  • Control of tongue (James 1:26)
    • James 3:8?- The tonque is an unruly evil
    • Colossians 4:6?- Let your speech be with grace.
  • Compassion and care for the needy (James 1:27)
  • Keep self unspotted from the world (James 1:27)
    • II Peter 3:14? – Be without spot and blameless.
• James 1:18?- Christians are to live like this.
• John 3:5?- We must be born of the water and the spirit.
