  • Elijah’s prayer
    • I Kings 18:36-37
    • His prayer was precise.
      • His prayer was very short:? two verses, 63 words.
      • He prayed earnestly.? James 5:17
      • Matthew 7:7?- “ask and ye shall receive”
    • The power of prayer
      • The power of prayer was in the one addressed.
      • In his prayer he pleads for two things.

    • The person praying.
    • The promise of prayer.
      • Prayed for famine, fire, and rain.? All came.
    • These were prayers of expectant faith.

Lessons From the Example Prayer

By David Watson

September 14, 2008

  • Matthew 6:9-13
  • Our Father
  • “Your will be done”
    • Matthew 16:18-19?- Kingdom and church are interchangeable.
    • At the time of this prayer, the church has not yet come.? That happened in Acts 2, so it is incorrect to now pray for the kingdom to come.
    • Psalms 103:19-20?- The angels obey in heaven.? Jesus prays that men will obey the same way on earth.
    • John 4:42; John 1:45?- the power of invitations to hear the gospel.
  • “Give us this day our daily bread.”
  • “Deliver us from evil”

Prayer
By Jesse Jenkins
Benchley, May 11, 2008

  • Luke 18:1; Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 4:2; Romans 12:12; II Thessalonians 5:17 – pray without ceasing
  • II Samuel 9:7 – this passage gives us an idea of what “pray without ceasing” means
  • Jesus prayed:
    • At the beginning of his ministry. Luke 3:21
    • At the start of the day. Mark 1:35
    • At meal time. Matthew 14:19
    • At the close of day. Matthew 14:23
    • When making big decisions. Luke 6:12-13
    • When He was transfigured. Matthew 17:1-2; Luke 9:28-29
    • At Gethsemane. Mark 14:32-36
    • As He was dying. Luke 23:34,46
  • How can we know He answers prayers?
    • One five letter word answers this question: FAITH
    • John 9:31; I Peter 3:21; I John 3:22; I John 5:14-15
  • How does He answer prayer?
    • We can’t understand how, but we know that He does.
    • He answers prayers by the laws He has put in place.
      • In spiritual things
      • In material things
  • Like Jesus, we should pray:
    • At the beginning of the day.
    • At meal time.
    • At the close of day.
    • When making big decisions.
    • During trials (at our Gethsemane).
    • At our death.
