• In this chapter, James shows that pure religion is personal.  If I am saved, it is because I overcame temptation, it is because I overcame lust, etc.
• James 1:1-12
  • Temptation overcome works spiritual growth and blessing.  (James 1:2-4)
  • When tempted, do not try to make it alone; turn to God for help.  (James 1:5-8)
  • Blessed is the one, who in trust of the Lord, overcomes temptation.  (James 1:12)
• James 1:13-15
  • God cannot be tempted with evil, nor does He tempt any man with evil.  (James 1:13)
  • People do tempt, i.e., test God.  (Luke 20:23; Acts 5:9; Acts 15:10)
  • God does tempt, i.e., test people.  (Genesis 22:1)
  • But it is the devil, through lust, that tempts people with evil.  (James 1:14-15)

• There are some principles more basic than hearing, believing, repenting, confessing, and being baptized.
• What are the first principles designed to accomplish?
  • Hebrews 5:8-9?- Obedience to God, both initially and subsequently.
• What are the first principles needed in order to obey God?
  • The Bible is the word of God.? I Thessalonians 2:13
  • God, because He is God, has the right to expect obedience and man, because he is man, must obey.
    • Romans 9:6-12?- God has the right to act as He pleases because He is God.
    • Romans 9:20-24?- Man must listen and obey because he is man.? Habakkuk 2:20
  • The value of truth.
    • Proverbs 23:23?- Buy truth, and do not sell it.
    • Jeremiah 42:1?- 43:2
      • Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do. Jeremiah 42:3
      • I will tell you everything the Lord says.? Jeremiah 42:4
      • Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God.? Jeremiah 42:6.
      • The Lord has told you, do not go to Egypt.? Jeremiah 42:19
      • You are lying!? The Lord our God has not sent you to say…? Jeremiah 43:2
  • The need to deny self.? Matthew 16:24; I Peter 3:15
  • The need to count the cost.? Luke 14:26; Matthew 10:34-39
  • God’s evaluation is all that matters.
    • Romans 14:11-12
    • Desire for human approval is dangerous.? Matthew 23:1-12; Galatians 2:11ff
  • Concern for my spiritual condition.? Luke 13:22-24; Psalms 119:59

    • I Timothy 4:12?- be a good example
    • Matthew 5:16?- let your light shine
  • Reception of truth (James 1:21)
    • Isaiah 55:11?- hear the word of the Lord
    • Luke 7:30?- many did not receive truth
    • Hosea 1:6 – God rejects those who reject Him
  • Meekness (James 1:21)
    • Being angry at the right things at the right time and not at the wrong things at the wrong time.
  • Obedience (James 1:22)
    • Colossians 3:6?- the importance of obedience
  • Steadfastness (James 1:25)
    • II Peter 1:5-11
  • Control of tongue (James 1:26)
    • James 3:8?- The tonque is an unruly evil
    • Colossians 4:6?- Let your speech be with grace.
  • Compassion and care for the needy (James 1:27)
  • Keep self unspotted from the world (James 1:27)
    • II Peter 3:14? – Be without spot and blameless.
• James 1:18?- Christians are to live like this.
• John 3:5?- We must be born of the water and the spirit.

• Acts 10:1-8,15,24-27,44-48?- The story of Cornelius.
  • We ought to care for others’ souls (Acts 10:24).? Cornelius called together others to hear Peter’s message.
    • Peter cared for Cornelius (Acts 10:27).? The vision helped Peter know he should go to Cornelius but it was against his culture.
    • Acts 11:1-14?- Peter had to defend his actions.? Acts 11:18?- it was accepted.
      • Racism has no part in a Christian’s life.? Romans 3:29; 10:12; I Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:28; 5:6; Ephesians 3:6
  • Now everyone needs the gospel.? Acts 13:46; Romans 2:11; Matthew 28:19
    • The old law was set in place to prepare for (look forward to) the new law that is for all men.
    • Even though Cornelius was a good man, he still has to follow the steps of salvation in order to be saved (Acts 10:2).
      • Despite how good people may be we have the obligation to find out God’s will and obey it!
      • Hebrews 10:26?- If we reject Jesus’ sacrifice and the plan?God put in place for our salvation, there’s nothing else out there for us.
  • We should obey.? Acts 10:47,48; 11
    • At the point of the angel visit or the point of receiving spiritual gifts they still weren’t saved.
