Magnatune rocks!

// November 19th, 2008 // View Comments // Mark's stuff

I’ve written about Magnatune a couple of times in the past, but since they have a new subscription model and lots of people still haven’t heard about them, I thought I’d post about them again.? Magnatune is an independent music label that tries not to be evil by giving the artists they sign 50% of all revenue from their music.? You can download music in a variety of formats (from MP3 all the way up to perfect quality FLAC and WAV files) that is all DRM free and pay whatever you want for an album (above a minimum price).? They even encourage you to share your music with your friends to promote the bands and the site. ? Now they have a monthly subscription you can get for $10/month that lets you download as much music as you want.? The full write-up is here.? The only hitch is that since this is an independent music label, you won’t find the big name artists you hear on the radio.? There is still a TON of good music, though, in a wide variety of genres.? Of course, you can listen to all music in its entirety off the website before you buy anything.

Walmart shutting down DRM servers

// October 10th, 2008 // View Comments // Mark's stuff

If you have any music you bought online from Walmart, you might need to burn your music to CD and then re-rip it to remove the DRM.? Apparently they are shutting down their DRM servers, so if you ever have to reinstall Windows or do something that requires you to re-license your music, you’ll be out of luck.

?Update:? Nevermind on that.? They are keeping the DRM servers up for now.

Melodyne

// April 14th, 2008 // View Comments // Mark's stuff

Richard sent me a link that some of the music nerds out there might enjoy. Head over to the Celemony web site and watch this demo video of their Melodyne software. It does frequency analysis of a music clip, pulls out the individual notes, and lets you move them around in pitch and time graphically to make new riffs, chords, or songs. Really cool stuff. Kinda pricey, though.
