Filled with the Spirit

By Steve Fontenot

Benchley, November 10, 2008

  • Luke 1:15?- John would be filled witht eh Holy Spirit even before he was born.
  • Acts 2:4?- apostles filled witht eh Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
  • Ephesians 3:18?- be filled with the Spirit
  • The phrase “filled with the Spirit” is idiomatic.? It is not literal.
    • Acts 10:44?- “fell upon” is idiomatic as well
    • II Timothy 1:14?- “dwells in us” is idiomatic
    • Acts 1:5?- “baptized with the Holy Spirit” is also idiomatic.
    • These figures of speech were often used then just as they are now.
  • Luke 4:28?- “filled with” means “under the influence of”
  • Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not the same as being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
    • Acts 1:4-5?- Baptism in the Holy Spirit is not a command to be obeyed.? It is a promise to be kept.? It was only promised to the apostles.
    • Luke 1:15?- This is not the same as baptism in the Holy Spirit.? See Luke 1:41,67.
      • There’s no record of Zacharias and Elizabeth ever prophesying again.
      • Acts 7:55?- the Holy Spirit temporarily allowed Stephen to see heavenly things.
      • Acts 13:9?- the Holy Spirit affected Saul
      • The power of the Holy Spirit may act only temporarily.
  • Ephesians 5:18-19?- result of the Holy Spirit’s power.
    • Colossians 3:16?- same result here, but different cause.? The gospel caused the result!
  • “Filled with the Holy Spirit” can mean a variety of things.
    • Acts 2:4?- Here it means the apostles had the ability to speak in tongues.
    • Acts 4:8?- Here it allowed Peter to speak what the Holy Spirit gave him to speak.
    • Acts 11:22-24?- Here it is connectd with Barnabas and this particular mission.
    • Acts 13:52?- Verse 48?shows that this refers to the knowledge they had of salvation for the Gentiles.
  • Never in the New Testament is “filled with the Holy Spirit” used to mean some kind of loss of bodily control.
  • Don’t let error rob you of the beauty and power of truth!
  • Ephesians 5:18-21
    • If we don’t sing, we aren’t filled with the Spirit!

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
By Jesse Jenkins
Benchley, May 4, 2008

  • The New Testament says the Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian. II Timothy 1:14
  • So it is not a question of whether but of how.
  • Is it literal and personal, or is it representatively through His revealed Word?
  • Deity dwells in the Christian.
    • The Father – II Corinthians 6:16; I John 4:12
    • Christ – Ephesians 3:17
    • The Holy Spirit – II Timothy 1:14
    • What is the meaning of Deity dwelling in the Christian?
    • No one thinks that the Father and Christ dwells in us personally.
  • Definition of two words:
    • “In” means “in union with” – John 17:21
    • “Dwell” means that the Word controls one’s life – Revelation 2:13; Colossians 3:16
  • Things that equal the same thing equal each other (transitive property).
    • John 1:7 – walk in light = fellowship with God
    • Walking in light = Holy Spirit dwelling in one
    • Therefore, Holy Spirit dwelling in one = fellowship with God.
  • Summary
    • Colossians 3:17 – Deity dwells in the Christian by faith. Faith comes by hearing the Word. Romans 10:17
    • Every influence ascribed to the Holy Spirit is also ascribed to the Word.
Holy Spirit Word
John 3:3,5 Born I Peter 1:22
John 16:7,8 Convicts Titus 1:9
Acts 9:31 Comforts I Thessalonians 4:18
Titus 3:5 Saves James 1:21
II Timothy 1:14 Indwells Colossians 3:16
  • Let the Word control your life and the Holy Spirit will dwell in you.

The Holy Spirit’s Role Today
By Jesse Jenkins
Benchley, April 27, 2008

  • In conversion
    • The Holy Spirit does operate in the conversion of the sinner.
    • No sinner can be converted without the work of the Holy Spirit.
    • But how does the Holy Spirit convert?
      • Not directly, but through His revealed word.
        • God draws man through the Word. John 6:44-45; Romans 1:16; II Peter 1:3; Jude 3; II Timothy 3:16-17
        • There is no evidence that God draws man any other way.
        • God calls man by the gospel.
    • By the Word, He:
      • Calls – II Thessalonians 2:14
      • Draws – John 6:44-45
      • Begets – James 1:18
      • Cleanses – John 15:3
      • Purifies – I Peter 1:22
      • Enlightens the heart – Psalms 119:130
      • Effects the new birth – I Peter 1:23
      • Saves – James 1:21
    • The Word is the only means by which the Holy Spirit ever converted anyone
      • When the Holy Spirit influenced man directly, He influenced the teacher, not the hearer.
        • Pentecost – Acts 2
        • The Samaritans – Acts 8
      • The Eunuch – Acts 8
      • Saul – Acts 9
      • Cornelius – Acts 11, verse 14 specifically
  • In spiritual growth
    • By the Word, He:
      • Guides – Psalms 119:105
      • Causes growth – I Peter 2:2
      • Builds up – Acts 20:32
  • In judgment
    • His word is that by which He will judge. John 12:48; Matthew 7:24-27; Romans 2:16
  • Whatever the Holy Spirit does, He accomplishes through His word.
  • To receive the Word is to receive the Holy Spirit.
