Compliments of Jesus

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, December 24, 2008

  • Jesus rebuked many more people than He complimented, but that was necessary for Him to do His work.
  • John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11):? Courage
    • Matthew 11:7?- John was not a “reed shaken by the wind”.? He did not bow to social or political pressure.
    • Mark 6:17-18?- John’s stand before Herod.
  • Nathaniel (John 1:47): ?Purity
  • Mark (Mark 14:8):? Service
    • “She’s done what she could.”
    • We must all do what we can do in service to God.

John 3:16

By Steve Fontenot

Benchley, November 13, 2008

  • John 3:16
  • This verse has been called the “golden text” of the Bible.
  • Matthew 4:5-7?- just quoting scripture is not enough to get down to the truth.
    • The law of harmony must be applied to harmonize all the scriptures on a particular topic.
  • This verse expresses God’s immense love for mankind and shows that the blessing of eternal life is available to all who believe.
  • Ephesians 2:8-9?- salvation is by the grace of God.? It’s not something we can earn.
  • If you are?a true believer, you can go to sleep at night without worrying about your fate.
  • But what does “believe” mean in John 3:16?

Faith
By John Lasater
Benchley, August 7, 2008

  • Romans 10:17; II Corinthians 5:7; II Corinthians 4:14 – We must understand the difference between opinion, knowledge, and faith.
  • Hebrews 11:8ff – The faith of Abraham
    • God asked him to leave his comfortable surroundings and move. Abraham did so without even knowing where to go.
    • God gave him the three promises that he never got to see, yet he believed that they would be fulfilled.
  • Hebrews 6:6-10 – Some get weary waiting for God’s promises. Don’t let your faith dwindle but have patience to the end.
  • Genesis 22:1ff – God asked Abraham to offer his son.
    • We may not be asked to do this but will be faced with trials in our life. We’ll know what God expects but it will be hard and take a lot of intelligent (Hebrews 11:17-19), moral, and emotional strength.
    • You have to be willing to do whatever God asks you to do or believe.
  • Hebrews 11:13-16 – Abraham was a spiritually minded man.
