Lessons from Elijah, Part 5

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, September 13, 2009

  • From triumph to defeat
    • Failure of God’s people is scattered over the pages of God’s word.
    • This shows two grand features of God and His word:
      • An impartial God wrote the book.
      • The God who wrote the Bible is a God of grace.
  • Elijah depressed
    • Jezebel put out a contract on his life.
    • He fled to Beersheba (about 120 miles).
    • “I alone am left.”
    • “I quit.”
    • Consider Elijah’s extremes.
      • Victory on Mt. Carmel.
      • Running for his life.
  • Two causes of Elijah’s depressed state.
    • First:? took his eye off God.
      • His courage had never been his own; he was strong when he looked to God.
    • Second:? he was emotionally drained and weary and felt self pity.
  • God’s mercy toward Elijah.
    • God’s angel gave him food.
  • His rest, his food, and his journey.
  • The Lord’s question; Elijah’s answer.
    • God answered Elijah’s needs.
    • God was telling Elijah that He did not need the wind or the earthquake.? His word was sufficient.
    • God still had work for Elijah to do.
    • God was going to give Elijah a successor.
