The Ten Commandments

- Exodus 20:1-17
- The first four relate to man’s relationship with God.
- The next five relate to man’s relationship with man.
- Respect the center of life – the family.? “Honor thy father and thy mother.”
- Respect for life itself:? “Thou shalt not kill.”
- Leviticus 17:11; Romans 13:4?- Capitol punishment
- There were different words in Hebrews for kill and murder.? This commandment uses the word for murder.
- Respect for the sanctity of the marriage relationship:? “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
- Respect for property:? “Thou shalt not steal.”
- Respect for name and honor:? “Thou shalt not bear false witness.”
- The tenth commandment looks inward.
- Respect for self:? “Thou shalt not covet.”
- One may covet his his neighbor’s wife and never make a perverse move.
- One may covet his neighbor’s property and never steal.
- Covetousness is intense desire, a feeling within.? Colossians 3:5
- The covetous man sets up idols in his heart and sins against himself and God.
