- Jesus rebuked many more people than He complimented, but that was necessary for Him to do His work.
- John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11): Courage
- Matthew 11:7 - John was not a “reed shaken by the wind”. He did not bow to social or political pressure.
- Mark 6:17-18 - John’s stand before Herod.
- Nathaniel (John 1:47): Purity
- Mark (Mark 14:8): Service
- “She’s done what she could.”
- We must all do what we can do in service to God.
- Roman Centurion (Matthew 8:10): Unusual faith
- Canaanite woman (Matthew 15:28): Great faith
- Poor widow (Mark 12:43-44): Sacrificial giving

- Pray every day.
- The Bible says we ought to pray. Philippians 4:6; Romans 12:12; I Thessalonians 5:17
- The Bible shows us what to pray for. John 17:9; 17:21; I Timothy 2:1-2
- The Bible tells us how NOT to pray. Matthew 6:5
- The Bible tells us how TO pray. I Peter 3:7,12; Luke 18:1-14; I John 3:21-22; 5:14-15; James 1:5-8
- Several things encourage us in prayer. Romans 8:26; James 5:13-18; Colossians 4:12
- How can we make sure to pray everyday?
- Read the Bible every week.
- Why should we read the Bible on a regular basis?
- I Timothy 4:13 - Because it pleases God.
- Because it is God’s sole revelation of truth. Psalms 119:105; Jude 3
- Because we can understand it and learn from it. Ephesians 3:4; Luke 10:26; Matthew 24:15; II Peter 3:16
- Because it takes our minds off of other things. Psalms 119:11
- What are some helpful tips?
- Use a plan (http://bibleclassmaterial.com)
- Use an accurate, readable translation.
- KJV, NKJV, NSB, ESV
- Use an audio Bible.
- Why should we read the Bible on a regular basis?
- Invite one person per event.
- Why would we want to have such a goal?
- Because souls have great, eternal value.
- Because God told us to.
- Why would we want to have such a goal?

- Philippians 2:5; Hebrews 5:8 - Jesus submitted to the Father’s will.
- Hebrews 12:2 - Jesus even submitted in sacrificing Himself. Luke 22:44
- Application
- Ephesians 5:22-24 - wives to husbands, church to Christ
- I Peter 5:5 - Be subject to those older than you and to God. God is opposed to pride.
- Philippians 2:3-4 - Look out for the interests of others.
- Philippians 2:5; Hebrews 5:8 - Jesus submitted to the Father’s will.
- Sympathy
- Hebrews 4:14-16 - Jesus knows about the temptation of sin.
- Application: Be sympathetic in helping others.
- Suffering
- I Peter 2:21-24 - Jesus’ example of suffering
- Hebrews 12:2 - Jesus endured the cross.

- Acts 8:13-24 - Simon was saved, but committed sin and required forgiveness (Acts 8:22-24).
- Romans 11:11-23 - Branches of the tree could be cut off and lost (Romans 11:20-21).
- I Corinthians 9:19-27 - Run the race so as to remain saved.
- Galatians 5:4 - It is possible to fall from grace. Galatians 1:6-7; 3:24
- Colossians 1:21-23 - We are blameless before God if we do not move away from the gospel.
- Hebrews 3:4-6 - Wea re the house of God if we hold fast.
- Hebrews 3:12-23 - Why were these brethren warned about falling away if it wasn’t possible?
- Hebrews 6:4-6 - Saved people can fall away!
- James 5:12,19-20 - Turning a fallen Christian back to God saves a soul from death!
- II Peter 1:10-11 - Be careful to make your calling and election sure.
- Application: Avoid having a false sense of security. Jeremiah 37:17-19; I Corinthians 10:12

The Purpose of the Assembly

- Leviticus 10:1-3 - God must be glorified in the assembly.
- Colossians 3:17; John 4:23-24; I Corinthians 3:1; II Corinthians 10:4 - Worship in spirit and truth.
- I Corinthians 14:40,26 - Things are to be done decently and in order for edification.
- Galatians 4:13-15 - Paul’s presentation before them wasn’t flawless because of his infirmity, but that wasn’t important from a spiritual point of view.
- Singing
- Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19-20 - for teaching, admonishing, and giving thanks.
- The song leader should help lead the congregation in orderly worship.
- The lyrics should be spiritually accurate and appropriate.
- The songs should not be so difficult as to keep people from paying attention to the lyrics.
- Things to watch out for:
- I Corinthians 14:16-19 - The leader must be heard and understood.
- Singing just because a soung sounds pretty.
- Singing spiritually inaccurate lyrics.
- Preaching
- II Timothy 4:5,2 - convince, rebuke, exhort
- II Timothy 3:13-17 - teach from the scriptures.
- Titus 2:1,11-15;3:1-2,8 - Paul’s instructions to Titus for preaching.
- Things to watch out for:
- Titus 3:9 - useless disputes should be avoided.
- II Timothy 4:3-4 - changing the message because people don’t want to hear the old message
- Matthew 15:9 - substituting ideas of man for doctrine from God
- Not speaking up
- Ephesians 4:11-15 - Fulfill the purpose and don’t just try to keep the audience entertained.
- Acts 17:26-27 - Our purpose is to seek God.
