      • Non-essential
      • Ridicule and misrepresentation

      • His churches
  • If he fails to keep you out of the church, he will do all he can to get you back in his domain.
    • Ways he does this:
      • Tries to weaken one’s faith.
      • Evil companions.
      • Worldly enterprise.
  • If he fails here then he tries to render you worthless to the Lord.
    • Ways he does this:
      • Keep us ignorant of God’s word
      • Interest us in pleasure
      • Keep us stingy
      • Make us chronic grouches
      • Make us adept at excuses
      • Hypocrisy
      • Chip on shoulder; feelings on elbow

• Despair in moments of personal crises or in the lives of others is a part of life.
• The question at such times is “Alas… what shall we do?”
• Statements in this context help to answer that question.
• Don’t fear.
  • Fear:? to stand in awe of;? a believe that we are in the presence of someone or something superior to us.

  • “Know” – to have regard for, appreciate

• Proper teaching
  • Bible based – II Timothy 3:16; Ecclesiastes 12:11-12
    • Do not withhold proper teaching from your children.? Bible teaching is absolutely essential.
  • Home based – Deuteronomy 6:4-9
    • Have God’s word readily available in the home.
  • Start young – II Timothy 2:15
  • Balanced – II Timothy 4:2; Titus 2:15
    • Praise, rebuke, instruct, exhort, correct.
  • Repeat, repeat, repeat – II Peter 1:12-13
    • This puts the word of God in your memory.
  • Bible classes – Do the best job you can.
  • Good examples – Philippians 2:14-16; Philippians 3:17; Philippians 1:27; II Samuel 12:14; Romans 2:17-24
    • The coming generation is watching and taking in everything we say and do.
  • Respectful treatment
    • Encourage and respect honest doubt and questions.? Acts 17:11; John 20:24-28
      • We’re taught to question what we’re taught and to compare it against the Bible.? Encourage this in those who are young (in age and faith).
  • True conversion
    • Conversion and loyalty to Christ, not “the church”.? Acts 16:15; Galatians 4:19
      • We need fewer “church of Christ-ers” and more Christians.
• These things will not guarantee success but will make it more likely.

  • Because of what is said about it in the New Testament, it is vital that our concept of this church be as accurate as possible and that we speak of it in terms that are scripturally accurate.
  • The church that Jesus built is NOT:
    • Some “institution” into which the lost are placed.
      • This concept makes the church into some “thing” other than the saved and this is an unscriptural concept.
    • Something that, once established, apostatized/ceased to exist, and was later restored.
    • Some institution that is composed of local churches.
  • The church that Jesus built:
    • Established a relationship in which it is possible for all men to be saved.? Ephesians 2:11-20
    • Hebrews 12:22-23

• What are the first principles designed to accomplish?
  • Hebrews 5:8-9?- Obedience to God, both initially and subsequently.
• What are the first principles needed in order to obey God?
  • The Bible is the word of God.? I Thessalonians 2:13
  • God, because He is God, has the right to expect obedience and man, because he is man, must obey.
    • Romans 9:6-12?- God has the right to act as He pleases because He is God.
    • Romans 9:20-24?- Man must listen and obey because he is man.? Habakkuk 2:20
  • The value of truth.
    • Proverbs 23:23?- Buy truth, and do not sell it.
    • Jeremiah 42:1?- 43:2
      • Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do. Jeremiah 42:3
      • I will tell you everything the Lord says.? Jeremiah 42:4
      • Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God.? Jeremiah 42:6.

• Suggestions for becoming better students
  • Context
    • I Corinthians 2:9?- Is Paul describing heaven?
      • No, he’s talking aobut the wisdom of God.
    • Luke 10:18?- Did Jesus reveal the name of the anti-Christ?
      • No.? Jesus?was saying that Satan was conquerable, his power could be overcome, and the power of the seventy over the demons was proof of this.
  • Compare translations.
    • Don’t rely upon one translation.
    • The “way I’ve always heard it explained” may not be right.
    • Romans 16:17?- KJV says to “mark” people.? ESV says to “watch out for” them.? Compare Philippians 3:17.
    • Romans 12:10?- KJV says “preferring” one another.? ESV says “outdo”.
    • I Peter 2:9?- KJV says “peculiar people”.? NIV says “a people belonging to God.”
    • II Timothy 2:15?- KJV says “study”.? NASB says “be diligent”.? The idea is to make diligent effort, not open a book.? Compare I Thessalonians 4:11.
  • Don’t rely upon other people.
  • Don’t abuse Bible study tools such as commentaries.
  • Be indepedent, unbound by tradition, unprejudiced.
  • Avoid studying to prove “them” wrong and “us” right.
