Lessons from Elijah, Part 5

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, September 13, 2009

  • From triumph to defeat
    • Failure of God’s people is scattered over the pages of God’s word.
    • This shows two grand features of God and His word:
      • An impartial God wrote the book.
      • The God who wrote the Bible is a God of grace.
  • Elijah depressed
    • Jezebel put out a contract on his life.
    • He fled to Beersheba (about 120 miles).
    • “I alone am left.”
    • “I quit.”
    • Consider Elijah’s extremes.
      • Victory on Mt. Carmel.
      • Running for his life.
  • Two causes of Elijah’s depressed state.
    • First:? took his eye off God.
      • His courage had never been his own; he was strong when he looked to God.
    • Second:? he was emotionally drained and weary and felt self pity.
  • God’s mercy toward Elijah.
    • God’s angel gave him food.
  • His rest, his food, and his journey.
  • The Lord’s question; Elijah’s answer.
    • God answered Elijah’s needs.
    • God was telling Elijah that He did not need the wind or the earthquake.? His word was sufficient.
    • God still had work for Elijah to do.
    • God was going to give Elijah a successor.

Calvinism Part 10:? Martin Luther

By David Watson

Benchley, September 9, 2009

  • The five solas:
    • Solus Christus (“Christ alone”)
    • Sola Fide (“faith alone”)
    • Sola Gratia (“grace alone”)
    • Sola Scriptura (“scripture alone”)
    • Sola Deo Gloria (“the glory of God alone)
  • Diet of Worms, 1521
  • Salvation:? the two big ideas of Luther’s time:
    • The realist position:? we receive grace at baptism, but must morally cooperate with it.? Cooperation earns us more grace, which earns us salvation.? (Promoted by Dominicans and Thomas Aquinas.)
      • We do not earn grace or salvation.? Ephesians 2:8
      • Baptism here is for grace and not for remission of sins, which goes against Bible teaching.
    • Nominalist position:? we put forth moral effort which God rewards with grace.? This makes more moral effort possible, which results in salvation.? (Promoted by Franciscans and William Ockham.)
  • Side point:? the more we use Bible verses, phrases, and terms in their context, the better our thinking and communication will be.? Nehemiah 8:8

  • Elijah’s prayer
    • I Kings 18:36-37
    • His prayer was precise.
      • His prayer was very short:? two verses, 63 words.
      • He prayed earnestly.? James 5:17
      • Matthew 7:7?- “ask and ye shall receive”
    • The power of prayer
      • The power of prayer was in the one addressed.
      • In his prayer he pleads for two things.
        • The glory of God.
        • The edification of the gospel.
    • The person praying.
    • The promise of prayer.
      • Prayed for famine, fire, and rain.? All came.
    • These were prayers of expectant faith.
    • Four features of his prayers:
      • Privacy of prayer.
      • Posture of prayer.
      • Persistency of prayer.
      • The answer of prayer.
  • God cares.
  • He knows our needs.
  • He provides.? Matthew 6:33

Calvinism Part 9:? Martin Luther

By David Watson

Benchley, September 2, 2009

  • Unconditional election, continued:
    • Romans 9:17-18?- The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart.
      • God caused Pharaoh’s heard to harden by doing things that He knew would cause Pharaoh’s heart to harden.? This doesn’t mean that God miraculously acted on Pharaoh or overrode his free will.
  • Martin Luther:? November 10, 1483 – February 18, 1546
    • Matthew 22:37-38?- Luther thought about this passage often.
    • Because of Luther’s intense guilt and feeling that God demanded impossible perfection, he went from fearing to hating God.
    • What is the correct Biblical perspective on Luther’s dilemma?
      • Romans 4:1-8?- Man can find forgiveness by works of faith – not by works of merit.
      • Colossians 1:19-23?- Jesus’ blood gives us forgiveness if we continue on the right path.
      • II Peter 3:14
      • Man does his part by obeying.? Hebrews 5:9
      • God does His part by providing redemption through Jesus’s blood.
    • Corruptions in the Romans Catholic church:
      • Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz
      • Johann Tetzel
      • Indulgences
        • What does the Bible say about indulgences?
          • Nothing!? Repentence, confession, and baptism is the way to salvation.
          • Luke 5:20-26
    • Ninety-five theses
      • October 31, 1517
      • Church door in Wittenburg, Germany.
      • Propositions for debate

  • Elijah and Ahab meet.
    • Jeremiah 5:1-3
    • Numbers 35:29-34?- God required capital punishment to be exercised in the Old Testament.
    • Who really cared about the people of Israel, Ahab or Elijah?? Who really cares about God’s people today:? those that try to bring innovations or those that try to stick to God’s word?
  • A challenge for battle.? I Kings 18:19-21
  • Rules for the controversy.? I Kings 18:22-46

    • I Timothy 6:18?- Be rich in good works.

Calvinism Part 8:? Unconditional Election

By David Watson

Benchley, August 26, 2009

  • Acts 13:48
    • This is just saying that the Gentiles who were Christians (i.e. had been appointed to eternal life) believed.
    • Alternative:? God ordained that those who believed would be saved.
    • We know from a host of other passages that belief comes before one beingappointed to a saved relationship with God.? Acts 16:31-34; John 3:14-16; 8:24; James 2:19
  • Romans 9:11-18
    • Context
      • In this passage, Paul is referring back to the physical lineage of Christ.? God promised Abraham that one of his descendants would bring a blessing to all the families on earth.?? Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:16
      • The key to understanding this passage is to recognize that it is not talking about salvation.? It is talking about how God chooses to work His plan on earth.
