Calvinism Part 4:? Total Depravity

By David Watson

Benchley, July 15, 2009

  • Luke 13:22-30
    • Calvinists interpret this to mean that people are not able to enter the narrow gate (verse 24) because of their total depravity.
    • The same verse 24 says that these same people are seeking God, but those that seek God are not totally depraved by definition.
    • I Corinthians 3:2; Matthew 25:10-13?- Examples of opportunities lost.? In Luke 13, the people lost the opportunity for salvation because they were “workers of iniquity” (verse 27).
  • Ephesians 2:1-3
    • The Calvinist view on this is that without God, man is incapable of willing and doing good.
    • Sin does cause spiritual death (separation from God) (verse 1).
    • The Ephesians used to walk in sin (routinely practice it) (verse 2).
    • Paul says we were all like this before we became Christians.? We did not restrain ourselves from fulfilling desires of the flesh (verse 3).
      • I Corinthians 11:14?- nature here refers to societal custom, not something innate to man.
      • Nature in verse 3 just means that they had sinned so much that the sin had become second nature.
      • Romans 2:14?- Here the nature of man is shown to be good, which directly contradicts the Calvinist position.
      • Ephesians 4:17-29?- Man’s will in the matter.

So you’ve probably messed with water rockets before, but you probably haven’t built one with detachable booster rockets, an altimeter, and a camera:

Calvinism, Part 3:? Total Depravity

By David Watson

Benchley, July 8, 2009

  • Ezekiel 18, continued
    • A person can choose to change from wicked to righteous.
  • John 6:35,63-65
    • Calvinists claim that this shows the people did not have saving faith.? God had to draw people to Him (John 6:44) in order for them to be saved.
    • Rebuttal:? God calls people not miraculously but by hearing His word (John 6:45).
  • Psalm 51:5
    • Calvinists argue that David says here that he was born in sin.
    • Who does the sin belong to in this verse?
      • David (other verses in Psalms disprove this)
      • His mother
      • David was born in a world full of sin.
      • David was being poetic and exaggerating how sinful he was.

December 25

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, July 5, 2009

  • Legal holiday
    • Family and friends eat, get together, give gifts, and put up decorations.
    • Can Christians practice these things without religious significance?
  • I Corinthians 8:4-11
    • A Christian could eat meat that had been sacrificed to idols if:
      • He knew the idol was nothing; thus he did not eat it “as a thing offered to an idol.”
      • He does not cause a weak brother to stumble.
    • The same principle applies to celebration of December 25.
  • I Corinthians 10:25-32
    • A Christian could eat what was sold in a market if:
      • He did not eat it as a service to the idol.
      • A non-believer invited him to a feast and set it before him and it was not declared to be in service to an idol.
    • Same principal for December 25.
  • Romans 14:1-5,13-15
    • See principals for first scripture.
  • Acts 21:17-26
    • Many Jews circumcised their male children and kept the customs as a service to God.
    • Paul taught against this, but he never taught Jews to forsake the customs as customs.
    • Paul observed the customs.
    • Many celebrate Christmas as a service to God.
    • I teach against this, but I do not teach that a Christian must give up customs as customs.
    • A Christian can observe the customs.
