Psalm 19

By David Watson

Benchley, March 29, 2009

  • God’s creation (Psalm 19:1-6)
    • We are to stop and observe God’s creation.
    • The earth shows signs of intelligent design.
    • The universe was set up specifically to support the existence of man.
    • Colossians 1:16?- The reason that Earth was created for man.
  • God’s word (Psalm 19:7-11)
    • Psalm 119:98?- We can become wise by following God’s word.
    • God’s laws may seem limiting to us, but they always lead to a better life.
  • Our obligation (Psalm 19:12-14)
    • Verse 14 would be an excellent prayer to say every morning.

Orderly Worship

By Jesse Jenkins

Benchley, March 29, 2009

  • I Corinthians 14:26-40
    • While we have no spiritual gifts today there are four principles in this reading that the Holy Spirit used to prove the regulations He placed on spiritual gifts.
    • These principals are to regulate our assemblies today.
  • The four principles
    • Let all things be done unto edification (I Corinthians 14:26)
      • Teaching – Acts 20:32
      • Praying – Lead appropriately
      • Singing – Colossians 3:16
      • Lord’s Supper on first day of the week
      • Giving on first day of the week
      • Announcements designed to edify
      • Confession of faith or sin
      • Baptism!
      • These are all things we have authority to do in the assembly.
    • Speakers to speak one at a time (I Corinthians 14:29-30).? God is not the author of confusion.
      • One speaker is edifying.
      • Two or more is confusing.
    • It is a shame for women to speak in the church (I Corinthians 14:35).
      • The wife of a prophet could not even ask her husband a question.
      • If no more were said about women speaking they would have to be absolutely quiet.
      • God made one exception (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
      • What about a woman confessing sins?? She should tell a man to say it for her.
    • Let all things be done decently and in order (I Corinthians 14:40).? Suggestions:
      • Those who lead in the assembly sit toward the front until assignment is completed.
      • When speaking, speak up.
      • Don’t introduce a new song on Sunday morning so we won’t be distracted while learning it.
      • If you can use the PowerPoint song slides, do so.

The Beginning of Life:? Abortion and Related Issues

By David Watson

Benchley, March 22, 2009

  • The Bible
  • What about abortion?
    • After studying the Bible, I believe we can conclude with certainty that abortion is sin.
    • Murder is wrong (Romans 1:29) because it is the unlawful taking of a life of one who was made in the image of God.
    • Abortion takes the life of an unborn child who has obviously not practiced evil.? The baby is not being executed for a crime – he is being murdered.
  • Is abortion wrong even in cases of rape?
    • If it would be wrong to kill the child after birth, it would be wrong before birth.
  • What about in vitro fertilization?
    • Luke 1:36?- Once conception (or fertilization) occurs, a human life has begun.
    • Because some of the fertilized eggs are purposefully discarded, this procedure is wrong.
  • What about non-surgical abortions (RU-486, etc.)?
    • These are wrong for the same reason surgical abortions are wrong.
  • How does the law treat an unborn child?
  • What about so-called “emergency contraceptive” (the morning after pill)?
    • These drugs might prevent fertilization, but it may also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting itself in the womb.
