The Role of Women

By David Watson

Benchley, April 5, 2009

  • I Corinthians 14
    • Paul is talking about the regulations that are in place when “the whole church assembles together” (I Corinthians 14:23).
    • Tongue-speakers:? I Corinthians 14:27-28
      • Notice that they were to keep silent in the church under certain conditions (such as not having an interpreter).
    • Prophets:? I Corinthians 14:29-33
      • Notice that they were to keep silent in the church under certain conditions (such as when another prophet was speaking).
    • Women:? I Corinthians 14:34-35
      • Notice that they were to keep silent in the church, period.
    • What does “keep silent” mean?
      • How is the word “speak” used in the contect of this chapter?? Each time we read about speaking in the church in this chapter, it’s talking about certain ones addressing the assembly.
    • But isn’t 14:34 just a Not-But statement that emphasizes subjection without condemning speaking?
      • If all we had was the Not-But statement in verse 34, then that would not be enough to forbid women speaking in the assembly.
      • There is more to it than subjection.? Verse 35b gives the universal principal.
  • I Timothy 2:11-12
    • This passage is talking about women and men in general.
    • This passage is not limited to the worship assembly.
    • Verse 12 is a Not-But phrase (emphasis, not condemnation).
    • Quiet/silence
      • Zodhiates:? “quietness, tranquility, stillness, referring to a quiet life (II Thessalonians 3:12)”.
    • Submissiveness/subjection
      • Renn:? This “is a noun denoting subjection in the sense of ’subjection’, ‘obedience’.”
    • Teach
      • Renn:? “Most common verb meaning ‘to teach’ in the New Testament.”
  • Applications
    • Women are not to fill the leadership roles in the church.? (I Timothy 3:2,12; I Peter 5:2)
    • Women cannot be preachers or take the lead in a worship assembly.
    • What about singing?
    • Can a woman teach a man outside the assembly?
      • Yes (Acts 18:26)
      • Priscilla must not have violated the rule that she live in subjection and quietness.
    • “Could a woman ever lead a lunchtime prayer?”
      • Yes, for other women or children, but not if a man is present.
  • Galatians 3:26
