By David Watson

  • The story of the Old Testament
    • Ecclesiastes 7:29 – Man was created good, but sought out evil devices.
    • Isaiah 59:2 – Sin separated man from God
      • Ezekiel 18:2ff – Each person bears the responsibility for their own sin
    • Within the first few chapters of the Bible, we have been introduced to the problem: sin
    • God makes three promised to Abraham:
      • Nation (fulfilled in Old Testament)
      • Land (fulfilled in Old Testament)
      • Universal blessing (fulfilled in New Testament)
    • The kingdom of Israel divides after the death of Solomon. Israel goes into idolatry and is taken into captivity about 721 B.C. Judah goes into captivity at about 586 B.C. A remnant of the people returns to rebuild the temple (Ezra and Nehemiah).
    • From this we see that it is important to follow God’s law!
    • God shows us the need that mankind had for a system of salvation. The stage is set for that third promise.
  • The story of the New Testament
    • Matthew 1:1 – the story of Jesus the Messiah
    • Matthew 4:23 – Jesus proclaimed the “gospel of the kingdom”
    • Hebrews 10:4 – a better sacrifice was needed
    • Hebrews 9:22 – forgiveness could only come with the shedding of blood
    • John 1:29 – Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb of God
    • Everything looks forward to the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2).
    • Hebrews 5:9 – Jesus is the author of salvation for all who obey.
