  • John 15:13 – Jesus showed the greatest love by laying down His life for us.
  • Luke 22:44 – Jesus’ sweat becomes like great drops of blood.
  • John 18:4-11 – Jesus voluntarily gives Himself up.
  • Jesus is taken to court.
    • Annas – Jesus is interrogated and struck.
    • Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin (Mark 14:55) – Jesus is interrogated, spit on, blindfolded, punched, slapped, and mocked.
    • Pilate – Jesus is questioned and not found guilty.
    • Herod – Jesus is questioned, mocked, and dressed in a robe.
    • Pilate – declares Jesus innocent again and then sentences Him.
  • John 19:1 – Jesus is scourged.
  • Mark 15:16-20 – the Roman soldiers make a crown of thorns and beat, and mock Jesus
  • At any time, Jesus could have saved Himself and called down legions of angels.
  • Hebrews 12:1-2 – Jesus despised the experience, but endured it.
  • Matthew 27:33-34 – Jesus refuses even a mild painkiller.
  • John 19:19-22 – Pilate puts a title on the cross naming Jesus as “the king of the Jews”.
  • John 19:31-37 – Jesus’ legs are not broken, but His side is pierced, all in fulfillment of prophecy.
  • I Peter 2:21-25 – Jesus leads the way as an example of obedience for us.
